Whitney Houston - Jesus Loves Me

Jesus Loves Me is taken from the soundrack to the motion picture The Bodyguard, starring Harrison Ford and Whitney Houston.

Purchase Whitney's Latest Release

One of the highlights of THE BODYGUARD soundtrack is how the film's female lead, Whitney Houston, brings her gospel roots front and center on the half dozen tracks which feature her soaring vocals. These churchy musical overtones are apparent throughout "Jesus Loves Me!" and on her unaccompanied intro to the hit "I Will Always Love You" (penned by country diva Dolly Parton), and in case you didn't get the message, Kirk Whalum's sanctified saxophone break adds an exclamatory Amen. Elsewhere Houston continues to mine her rich vein of ornate balladry and pop-flavored dance workouts on the Ashford & Simpson original "I'm Every Woman" and on her own "Queen Of The Night," with its percolating upbeat production a la L.A. Reid & Babyface.

But for fans of romantic pop there's more than Whitney Houston to recommend THE BODYGUARD: The quavering falsetto and rich tenor of the great vocal stylist Aaron Neville find a perfect compliment in Kenny G's soulful alto breaks on "Even If My Heart Would Break;" Curtis Stigers offers a taste of Stax/Volt soul on his version of Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding," and Joe Cocker teams with Sass Jordan on the rocking love song "Trust In Me."

THE BODYGUARD won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Record Of The Year." "I Will Always Love You" won 1994 Grammys for "Record Of The Year" and "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female." "I'm Every Woman" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female."

Mahalia Jackson - Oh Happy Day

Mahalia Jackson (1911 – 1972) was an African American gospel singer, widely regarded as one of the best in the history of the genre. She grew up in the "Black Pearl" section of the Carrollton neighborhood of uptown New Orleans, Louisiana and began singing in a Baptist church. She moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1927 where she sang with The Johnson Brothers, one of the earliest professional gospel groups.

The Johnson Brothers broke up in the mid 1930s, and Jackson began her solo career, recording for Decca in 1937. The result, God's Gonna Separate the Wheat from the Tares was only a moderate success, but Jackson became a popular concert draw. She experienced a recording hiatus until 1946 when she signed with Apollo Records, releasing several singles that are now highly regarded, though sales were sluggish at the time. Move on up a Little Higher (1948) became a huge success however, and stores couldn't stock enough of it to meet demand. Jackson rocketed to fame in the US, and soon after in Europe. I Can Put My Trust in Jesus won a prize from the French Academy, while Silent Night was one of the best-selling singles in the history of Norway. She began a radio series on CBS, and signed to Columbia Records in 1954. With her mainstream success came an inevitable backlash from gospel purists who felt she had watered down her sound for popular accessibility.

Jackson's career in the late 1950s and early 1960s continued to rise when she recorded with Percy Faith, and performed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival and the inauguration of John F. Kennedy. She also sang at the funeral of her friend, Martin Luther King, Jr. The late 1960s saw a downturn in her popular success. She ended her career with a concert in Germany in 1971; when she returned, she made one of her final television appearances on The Flip Wilson Show.

Jackson died in 1972 in Chicago and was buried in Providence Memorial Park, Metairie, Louisiana. She was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Association's Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1978.

Kirk Franklin - My Life Is In Your Hands

My Life Is In Your Hands
is on the album Kirk Franklin's Nu Nation. It also features: Love, Sweet Spirit, Up Above My Head, He'll Take The Pain Away and the original Stomp.

Kirk Franklin is a platinum-selling African-American musician who blended gospel, hip hop, and R&B in the 1990s. He released his first gospel album, Kirk Franklin & Family, in 1993, and is known as the leader of contemporary gospel choirs such as Kirk Franklin & the Family, Kirk Franklin's Nu Nation, and God's Property.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, he was raised by his aunt, Gertrude Franklin. He developed a talent for music early, playing the piano at age four and becoming music director of his church at age eleven. After getting kicked out of school in his teenaged years and a girlfriend became pregnant, he returned to the church after a friend was shot to death. After leading the DFW Mass Choir at the 1990 Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention, he organized "The Family", a seventeen-voice choir, in 1992 and began his recording career.

He has integrated hip hop styles with gospel themes in albums such as The Nu Nation Project and God's Property, which achieved success on the Billboard Pop Album, R&B and gospel charts.

Aaliyah - Ave Maria (Rare)

Rare dance scene featuring Aaliyah

Aaliyah's not just another R&B chick--the girl's been exposed to much culture. When she auditioned for the Detroit Performing Arts High School in 1994, she wowed the judges with a classic rendition of the aria "Ave Maria" in Italian.
